Join me in being a friend to WHRO Public Media!
Though a lover of words, I am someone who prefers to stay in the background of social media. I would rather read everyone else's words, sift through everyone else's photos, scroll past other requests for money or clicks. However, I have decided I want to start using whatever small platform I have to speak up and support causes, organizations, thoughts, words that I believe in. WHRO Public Media is one of these beloved things.
When Ron and I first moved to Norfolk, I grieved the loss of routine access to my favorite NPR-affiliated public radio station in Pittsburgh. My morning commutes would not be the same. Then we found WHRV 89.5 FM, and I was a happy commuter again. Not just because I'm a news junkie who loves NPR, but because I was introduced to a wide-range of local programming. My favorites are Out of the Box with Paul Shugrue and HearSay with Cathy Lewis, but I am always thrilled when I am lucky to catch The Thomas Jefferson Hour or Sinnett in Session.
Just last Saturday, Ron and I were driving home from a late-night movie. It was a beautiful summer night, and we had the sun roof open and WHRV on the radio. Band music from the 1940s and 50s filled the air as we crossed over the Granby Street bridge at sunset, and I thought how lucky we are to live in Norfolk with a station like this.
Now, more than ever, I feel we need to step up and support the things we love and so often take for granted. Public media is one of those things, and I hope you'll join me in helping them meet this fundraising goal. Donate $10 or $20 this week and know you're not only supporting an "NPR station," but the only public broadcasting station in the United States that is owned by a collaboration of 21 local public school districts. It gives back to us in so many ways, and so we should give back to it. Please join me to #SupportWhatYouLove and keep this beautiful organization alive for the benefit of future generations.
